Leaves, roof grit, and organic debris block water from moving through the system, which means it backs up instead — over the gutter edge, behind the fascia board, and in the worst cases, into the roofline itself. That’s how a clogged gutter turns into interior water damage, not just an exterior maintenance issue.

4. Inspect where the gutter meets the fascia board. Water stains, soft wood, or gaps at this joint are a sign water has already been backing up and finding a way behind the gutter system.

5. Confirm downspouts direct water away from the foundation. In a heavy storm, a downspout dumping water right next to the house can contribute to foundation and landscaping problems on top of the gutter issue itself.

6. Don’t skip the roofline above the gutters. Algae, mildew, and roof runoff staining often show up right where the roof meets the gutter — worth a look while you’re already checking this area.
